Nancy Cunningham Hinton

May 23, 1934 — October 5, 2017

Nancy Cunningham Hinton, age 83, passed away on October 5, 2017 after a brief illness.  She lived in West Memphis, AR but was originally from Trezevant, TN.  Nancy was the only child of Rosa Newbill Yates and Charles Yates of Trezevant.  Nancy graduated from Trezevant (Tennessee) High School and the University of Memphis.  She was retired from the State of Tennessee Department of Children’s Services after over 40 years of service.  She was also retired from the State of Arkansas after 10 years of service. Nancy was a member of First Baptist Church in West Memphis and previously First Baptist Church in Trezevant.  In earlier years, she was an accomplished vocalist and pianist.  She was a fierce advocate for children and families having been one of the first Protective Services Supervisors in Shelby County, TN.  She shaped and improved the lives of countless children, including her own and extended family.  Nancy’s favorite activities were spending time with her family and watching the Memphis Grizzlies. Nancy was preceded in death by her father, Charles Yates, husbands Gordon Cunningham & James Hinton as well as her grandson, David Odom.  She is survived by her mother, Rosa Newbill Yates of Bartlett, TN and Trezevant, TN and three daughters:  Sherry Cunningham Schedler of Bartlett and Perian Cunningham Ragland and Kara Cunningham Odom of West Memphis, AR. She leaves her grandchildren Keith and Michael Odom, Jason Schedler, Rachel Wilson and Rana Ragland.  She also leaves her brother and sister in law, Ray and Diana Cunningham of McKenzie, TN and sister in law Marilyn Cunningham Barnett of Huntingdon, TN as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins that she adored.  She also leaves an uncle, Jack Newbill of LaGrange, GA. Nancy’s service was held at First Baptist Church in Trezevant, Tennessee conducted by Rev. Malcolm Norton.  The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind expressions of sympathy, especially the close family of friends at First Baptist in Trezevant for their hospitality, prayers and ongoing support. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to First Baptist Church, Building Fund, 60 Church Street, Trezevant, Tennessee 38258.
